Stash Busting Project Ideas
Godavari Floral Paisley, Borlotti Colorway
I used some project remnants to make this Mini Coin Purse. This is a free pattern by Caroline at Sew Can She. It is a super cute way to use up very small pieces of fabric. Sew Can She’s blog posts are jam packed with adds and pop up windows. I recommend just printing the pattern piece, reading through the blog once and writing a few notes to refer to while sewing. This pattern calls for fusible fleece interfacing, but Petal Signature Cotton has enough structure that you can absolutely just sub some SF101 woven interfacing, or skip it all together. The pieces of this coin purse fit together beautifully, the only faffy bit is pseudo boxed corners on the final step. These are left with raw edges, and finished with a zig zag (see the last photo). I prefer concealed seams, but for turning a bag this small, it’s a forgivable shortcut.
I often block fuse my fabric with SF101 before I cut out the pieces, to prevent fraying. So it’s helpful to have a few projects in mind for using those fused remnants. This Tiny Cata pattern, by by Oro Rosa, works beautifully, and is genius in its simplicity. This is my Saw-Whet Owls design on recycled canvas, paired with a light vinyl exterior, and a petal signature cotton lining. It would be a great pattern to sew in bulk, because so many of the pieces can be cut with a straight edge. For bulk sewing I would assemble the zipper gusset & lining as one long piece and then cut it down to size. I’d love to hear suggestions of your favorite stash busting small projects!
I stitched this bag on a Reliable 4220SW (the Canadian equivalent of a Juki 1541SW) but it can be made on a domestic.
